When I was learning English in college, one topic that looked very easy but still confused me was Imperative Sentence. At first, I thought, “Oh, this is just about giving orders.” But later I realized it is more than that. It also includes advice, requests, and polite suggestions.
So today, I will explain Imperative Sentence in a very simple way, just like a friend teaching another friend. No hard words. No boring theory. Only clear understanding.
Why Learn Imperative Sentence?
Most beginners ask me, “Why should we learn this?”
My answer is simple.
Because:
- We use it while talking to friends.
- Teachers use it in class.
- Parents use it at home.
- Boss uses it in office.
- Even Google Maps uses it: Turn left.
In my experience, once you understand imperative sentences, your spoken English becomes more natural and confident.
What is an Imperative Sentence?
Definition
An imperative sentence is used when we give an order, command, request, or advice to someone.
जब हम किसी को आदेश, सुझाव, या प्रार्थना देने के लिए वाक्य बनाते हैं, तो उसे आज्ञासूचक वाक्य कहते हैं।
Simple words:
If you tell someone to do something or not to do
something, you are using an imperative sentence.
Example in daily life:
- Sit here.
- Don’t shout.
- Please help me.
You use these lines every day without even thinking about grammar.
Types of Imperative Sentences
Imperative sentences are mainly of two types:
- Order / Command
- Request / Advice
Let us understand both one by one.

In Request/Advice, there are two parts:
- Positive Form
- Negative Form
Positive Form
Definition
It is Used when making a polite request or giving advice.
Words like please or kindly are often used.
When I first started speaking English, I forgot to use “please”. It sounded rude. So always remember, politeness matters.

Examples
- Please believe me. – कृपया मुझ पर भरोसा करें।
- Please find out the solution of this problem. – कृपया इस समस्या का हल खोजें।
- Please wait here. – कृपया यहाँ इंतजार करें।
- Please help me. – कृपया मेरी मदद करें।
Negative Polite Form
Structure
Please + don’t + V1 + Object
Examples
- Please don’t believe him. – कृपया उस पर भरोसा न करे |
- Please don’t walk barefoot. – कृपया नंगे पैर मत चलो |
- Please don’t shout. – कृपया चिल्लाओ मत।
- Please don’t waste time.– कृपया समय बर्बाद मत करो।
Small Tip:
Using please makes your English soft and respectful.
Important Points to Remember
1. Subject (You) is hidden in imperative sentences.
Example:
- (You) Sit down.
- (You) Open the door.
2. Verb is always in V1 form.
3. Tone depends on words like please.
Tiny Analogy to Understand
Think of imperative sentence like a remote control.
You press a button, and the TV
follows.
Same way, you say a command, and the person understands what to do.
Simple, right?

Most beginners get confused with:
